What Sets Me Apart

I put my heart and being into everything I make.

Calligrapher, Shunyo

I write slightly rounded semi-cursive script so as to bring the lines to life while being aware of the momentum and stop of the brush.

How to break the characters is the true pleasure of any calligrapher, but I also take into consideration the balance with the margins.I also account for arrangement, strength, shading and the like, so that it becomes a readable work of art.

Finally, I stamp all my calligraphy with my calligrapher’s official seal with vermilion ink.

All of this weaves together to deliver a beautiful traditional artwork that also has beauty in our modern age.

What Is Important To Me

The tools of the trade

Calligrapher, Shunyo inkstone

Calligrapher, Shunyo writing brush

I want to keep the traditional items of a calligrapher important even in our modern day. The use of paper, ink stones and the ink itself is important. These things have been used by calligraphers for generations and I will continue to use them as well.

Hosokawa Paper

Calligrapher, Shunyo HOSOKAWA paper

Calligrapher's Artwork, Shunyo [Framed type] 四字熟語 瑞氣集門

All of my calligraphy is done on Hosokawa paper, handmade Japanese paper registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
This Japanese paper is handmade using only natural materials in accordance with the traditional manufacturing method.

Hosokawa paper is only made in Ogawa. And the tradition has been handed down for 1300 years in Ogawa Town and Higashi Chichibu Village, located in Saitama Prefecture.
It was designated as a national important cultural property in 1978.
In 2014, it was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

It has a toughness unique to unbleached pure paper, a simple and lustrous luster and a rigid and elegant look to it.
Although it is extremely thin, it is durable and is also used for the restoration of European paintings.

Here at Kanji de Sho, we only use Hosokawa paper. One you see and feel it, I’m sure you will understand why.
