What is Setsubun?

Setsubun means the turning point of all seasons.

It means “dividing the seasons.

The day before the first day of spring 立春、 summer 立夏、autumn 立秋、and winter 立冬　is called Setsubun,respectively.

Among them, spring is considered to be the beginning of the New Year, and the spring Setsubun was considered important.

Since it was believed that evil spirits (ogres) would arise at the change of seasons, “mame-maki” (bean throwing) is held to drive away evil spirits (ogres).
